The size of the dowry greatly influenced a woman's chance of finding a suitable husband, and without it, a young woman was unlikely to marry at all. The man, however, was too poor to offer any dowry for his daughters, and as time passed, the girls faced an uncertain future. Without dowries, they were in danger of being sold into slavery or living a life of hardship.
Upon hearing of their plight, Saint Nicholas, who was known for his acts of generosity, decided to help them in secret. Rather than make his assistance known publicly, he chose to act in a quiet and humble manner, preserving the dignity of the family. On three separate occasions, he secretly visited their home during the night. He tossed a bag of gold through an open window, and the gold would land in a stocking or shoe that had been placed by the fire to dry. This gold was exactly what the daughters needed—enough to secure a dowry and ensure their marriages to good men.
The first bag of gold enabled the eldest daughter to marry, the second provided for the second daughter, and the third bag ensured that the youngest daughter was also able to marry. Each time, the poor man was overwhelmed with gratitude, but he had no idea who had performed this generous act. It wasn’t until later that he discovered that it was none other than the kind and compassionate Saint Nicholas, who had acted out of love and mercy for the family.
