Baptism holds a central and irreplaceable role as both a sacrament and as a necessity for salvation. Baptism is the first step in the journey of faith, cleansing individuals from original sin and incorporating them into the body of Christ, the Church.

From the very beginning of the Church, baptism has been understood as essential for salvation. Jesus Himself, though sinless, was baptized to fulfill all righteousness (Matthew 3:15), setting an example for His followers. In the Great Commission, He instructed His disciples to baptize all nations, affirming its importance: "Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Ghost" (Matthew 28:19). This command highlights baptism as a foundational aspect of Christian life, marking one's entry into the Christian community.

The necessity of baptism is also emphasized in the teachings of the Apostles. In the Acts of the Apostles, Peter responds to a question about salvation by saying, "Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins" (Acts 2:38). Here, baptism is closely linked to repentance and forgiveness, indicating its role in cleansing believers from sin and granting them the grace of salvation.

Moreover, Jesus' words in John 3:5 underscore baptism’s necessity for entering the Kingdom of God: "Very truly I tell you, no one can enter the kingdom of God unless they are born of water and the Spirit." This passage affirms that baptism is not merely symbolic but a means by which a person is spiritually reborn, receiving the Holy Spirit and becoming a member of God’s family.

St. Paul also reinforces the significance of baptism in his letters, particularly in Romans 6:4, where he writes, "We were therefore buried with him through baptism into death in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, we too may live a new life." Baptism is thus a sharing in the death and resurrection of Christ, signifying our transformation and new life in Him.

Baptism is therefore indispensable for salvation, an act of obedience to Christ’s command, and a sacrament through which one is cleansed from sin, reborn in the Spirit, and brought into the community of the Church.
